{"id":675,"date":"2025-10-10T20:38:57","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T18:38:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/beastie\/vise-proteina\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T20:19:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T18:19:39","slug":"does-more-protein-slow-down-digestion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marinabosnjakovic.com\/en\/does-more-protein-slow-down-digestion\/","title":{"rendered":"Does More Protein Slow Down Digestion?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eating More Protein but Feeling Like Your Digestion Has Slowed Down?<\/p>\n<p>Everywhere you look, people are telling you to eat more protein.<\/p>\n<p>But after a while, your digestion seems to slow down.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly you&#8217;re not sure what to do anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Is protein really the problem?<\/p>\n<p>And should you simply focus on hitting a protein target, or does the source matter too?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a strong advocate of adequate protein intake.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m an even bigger advocate of a balanced diet and getting nutrients from whole-food sources whenever possible.<\/p>\n<p>When women join my programme, I review their eating habits in detail.<\/p>\n<p>We gradually introduce foods, adjust meal timing and improve food combinations.<\/p>\n<p>And every now and then, a client tells me that increasing protein has slowed down her digestion&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;but the issue usually has nothing to do with the amount of protein itself.<\/p>\n<p>So what is most often happening?<\/p>\n<p>When you decide to eat more protein, it&#8217;s common to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reach for highly processed foods such as protein puddings, protein bars and shakes. While these can be useful, they should complement your diet\u2014not become the foundation of it<\/li>\n<li>forget to drink enough water<\/li>\n<li>consume too little fibre<\/li>\n<li>sleep poorly<\/li>\n<li>experience high levels of stress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Protein should primarily come from whole-food sources.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, supplements can be useful from time to time, but they shouldn&#8217;t replace proper meals simply because preparing food feels inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>\u203c\ufe0f A whey shake will never be the same as a piece of fish.<\/p>\n<p>Another factor that is often overlooked is fibre.<\/p>\n<p>How much fibre do you need each day?<\/p>\n<p>Women need around 27 g.<\/p>\n<p>Men need around 33\u201335 g.<\/p>\n<p>EVERY DAY.<\/p>\n<p>And while you may read that chia seeds are an excellent source of fibre\u2014and they are\u2014high-fibre \u201csuperfoods\u201d should still be introduced thoughtfully and with attention to how your body responds.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve never eaten them before, your gut microbiome may not know how to handle large amounts immediately, which can leave you feeling bloated.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s best to introduce them gradually and in small amounts, while getting the rest of your daily fibre intake from a variety of other foods.<\/p>\n<p>To further support digestion, you might also consider flaxseed oil, which contains ALA (alpha-linolenic acid).<\/p>\n<p>It may help support digestive health, can be beneficial during perimenopause, and may contribute to improved body composition when combined with healthy lifestyle habits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eating More Protein but Feeling Like Your Digestion Has Slowed Down?
